Orientation for New CIL & SILC Personnel: Part I

COURSE DATES: September 8-October 3, 2008
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: August 28, 2008
ORIENTATION TELECONFERENCE FOR STUDENTS: September 4, 2008
TARGET AUDIENCE: New center and SILC staff, as well as board members. This is a beginning level course.
PURPOSE: This four-week course is designed to give new CIL and SILC employees and board members a solid understanding of the principles and philosophy of independent living. Topics include the history of independent living, consumer control, cross-disability issues, equal access, peer relationships, and self advocacy. Students also discuss the implication of the federal standards and indicators (the Rehab Act and regulations) on the philosophy.

Getting on Board! (for IL Boards of Directors)

COURSE DATES: November 3-21, 2008
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: October 20, 2008
ORIENTATION TELECONFERENCE FOR STUDENTS: October 30, 2008
TARGET AUDIENCE: This course will be particularly relevant to members of boards of directors and administrative staff of all CILs and SILCs which have established non-profit status.
PURPOSE: Participants in this three-week course will take a close look at boards of directors of non-profit centers for independent living (CILs) and statewide independent living councils (SILCs). In addition to examining non-profit boards' traditional responsibilities, participants will study challenges that are unique to consumer-controlled organizations that adhere to independent living principles. Topics include setting the organization's course, building its infrastructure, and monitoring progress.

Financial Management for Centers for Independent Living

Smooth as SILC: An Introduction to Statewide Independent Living Councils

ORIENTATION TELECONFERENCE FOR STUDENTS: April 3, 2008
TARGET AUDIENCE: SILC executives, staff, and members. CIL staff and board may benefit as well. This is a beginning to intermediate level course. 
PURPOSE: This three-week distance learning course orients members of SILCs to the laws and regulations that guide their daily activities. In addition, it applies the principles and philosophy of independent living to situations commonly encountered by statewide independent living councils.

Introduction to Olmstead

ORIENTATION TELECONFERENCE FOR STUDENTS: May 1, 2008
TARGET AUDIENCE: Center and SILC staff, managers, and executives, as well as board members. This is a beginner to intermediate level course.
PURPOSE: Participants will learn about the background and significance of the U.S. Supreme Court Olmstead decision. They will examine a framework for analyzing disability policy that may be used to determine if state and federal laws and programs really support the rights of persons with disabilities. They will also better understand how the ADA formed the basis for the Olmstead Decision and the importance of that decision for people with disabilities. Participants will better understand how and why individuals with disabilities can plan and direct their own services. Additionally, the participants will focus on using the concept of "consumer direction" to support the choices of those who want to leave institutional settings (such as nursing homes) and live in the community with the supports that they need.

Advanced Olmstead: Transition from Nursing Homes to Community

TARGET AUDIENCE: Center and SILC staff, managers, and executives, as well as board members. This is an intermediate to advanced level course.
PURPOSE: This course will provide participants with an in-depth perspective on assisting people with disabilities as they make the transition from nursing home to community. The course will address key phases of transition and provide useful information for working with people who experience several secondary disabilities that often have an effect on transition.

Emergency Preparedness

PURPOSE: This three-week online course provides an survey and overview of disability related disaster issues. Few people get adequate training on helping themselves and the people they work with take greater responsibility for their own emergency safety and preparedness. This course is designed to begin to fill this existing gap in disaster preparedness and response or disability organizations.

PURPOSE: This course will provide a framework to help centers and SILCs ensure services fully meet the needs of people from a variety of backgrounds and that centers are fully welcoming to all. Participants will receive support in the creation of a strategic process to fully engage people from a variety of cultural and ethnic groups in center and SILC activities and to improve capacity to offer services that are consistent with and supportive of all cultures.

Violence Against Individuals with Disabilities - Recognition, Response and Prevention

TARGET AUDIENCE: Center and SILC executives, and other managers, as well as board members. This is a beginning to intermediate level course.
PURPOSE: Participants will gain a greater understanding of domestic violence and sexual assault to help CILs recognize, respond to, and prevent abuse. Topics include abuse specific to individuals with disabilities, barriers to
reporting, recognizing the signs of violence and abuse, screening, responding to disclosures of abuse, referrals, legal resources, personal safety planning, agency guidelines to reduce risk, and prevention strategies.
